Der private Bodenforscher und Diplom-Permakulturdesigner und -Lehrer und Diplom-Architekt Herwig Pommeresche beschäftigt sich zeit seines Lebens in Theorie und Praxis mit Garten- und Ackerbau. Er hat dabei eine Reihe kaum bekannter Forschungsarbeiten gründlich unter die Lupe genommen und mit den üblichen konventionellen Methoden verglichen.
Was er herausgefunden hat: Wir haben offenbar ein unzureichendes Verständnis von den Mechanismen, mit denen Pflanzen ihre Nährstoffe aufnehmen und verarbeiten. Unser bisheriges Modell ist, dass sie ihre Nährstoffe lediglich in Form von gelösten (Dünge-)Salzen aus dem Wasser beziehen. Auf diesem Modell, das der Autor "Mineralmodell" nennt, bauen seit Mitte des Neunzehnten Jahrhunderts die Düngemethoden in Landwirtschaft und Gartenbau auf. Sie sind seither nie infrage gestellt worden - trotz der Probleme, die sie verursachen.
Doch es gibt (schon seit vielen Jahrzehnten, aber auch ganz aktuell) auch Arbeiten von Naturwissenschaftlern, die noch eine ganz andere Form der Pflanzenernährung erforscht haben: Pflanzen können, vereinfacht gesagt, durch "Umstülpung" ihrer Feinwurzelzellen größere Nahrungspartikel aufnehmen und ins Zellinnere befördern. So können sie auch größere Moleküle und sogar ganze Zellen (wie Bakterien) aufnehmen, und zwar - und das ist das Interessante daran - auch in lebender Form. Diesen Vorgang nennt man Endozytose. In der Zoologie und der Mikrobiologie ist Endozytose schon lange bekannt. Noch zu wenig bekannt ist, dass sie auch von höheren Pflanzen praktiziert wird. Müssen wir diese Erkenntnisse zum Anlass nehmen, unsere landwirtschaftliche Praxis auf den Prüfstand zu stellen?
Herwig Pommeresche stellt dem immer noch gängigen chemisch-technisch geprägten Landwirtschaftssystem ein ökologisch orientiertes Verständnismodell entgegen. Darauf aufbauend, diskutiert er die agrarkulturellen Errungenschaften beispielgebender prähistorischer Völker ebenso wie die wichtigsten Erkenntnisse moderner Biologen und Agrarfachleute, die auf diesem Gebiet Pionierarbeit geleistet haben.
